Our Materials
Materials as Heritage
At Adjeley Jewelry, every piece begins with a deep respect for the natural materials we source locally in Ghana. We work with organic, porous materials that carry the essence of our land and culture calabash, coconut shells, wood, beads, rhinestones, resin, vibrant fabrics and gold-plated brass. These aren't just components; they're heritage, and we treat them with the same reverence you would treat skin.
Calabash
Calabash is one of our signature materials, deeply rooted in Ghanaian tradition. Harvested from the calabash gourd plant, this organic material has been used for centuries across West Africa for functional and decorative purposes. Each calabash piece is carefully shaped, sanded, and polished by hand in our studio.
Characteristics:
- Lightweight and comfortable for all-day wear
- Natural variations in color and grain make each piece unique
- Porous material that develops character over time
- Sustainable and biodegradable
Care: Calabash requires gentle care. Avoid prolonged water exposure, store in a cool dry place, and occasionally treat with natural oils to maintain its luster and prevent drying.
Coconut Shell
Coconut shell is another organic material we cherish for its rich, warm tones and natural durability. Sourced locally, each shell is cleaned, cut, shaped, and polished to reveal its beautiful natural grain and deep brown hues.
Characteristics:
- Rich, earthy tones ranging from light tan to deep chocolate brown
- Naturally strong and durable
- Smooth finish when polished
- Each piece has unique natural patterns
- Eco-friendly and sustainable
Care: Like calabash, coconut shell is porous and should be kept dry. Clean with a soft cloth and avoid harsh chemicals or prolonged moisture.
Wood
We work with locally sourced Ghanaian woods, carefully selected for their beauty, grain, and workability. Each wooden element is hand-carved and finished to highlight the natural beauty of the material.
Characteristics:
- Natural wood grain creates one-of-a-kind patterns
- Warm, organic aesthetic
- Lightweight and comfortable
- Ages beautifully with proper care
Care: Keep wood jewelry dry and away from direct sunlight. Treat occasionally with natural wood oils to maintain moisture and prevent cracking.
Beads
Beads have been part of Ghanaian adornment traditions for generations. We incorporate glass beads, stone beads, and traditional African beads into our designs, adding color, texture, and cultural significance to our pieces.
Characteristics:
- Vibrant colors and patterns
- Cultural and historical significance
- Durable and long-lasting
- Add movement and dimension to designs
Care: Beads are generally durable but should be handled gently to avoid chipping. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and dry immediately.
Rhinestones
We use high-quality rhinestones to add sparkle and elegance to select pieces. These glass crystals catch the light beautifully and elevate our designs from everyday to statement-making.
Characteristics:
- Brilliant sparkle and shine
- Available in various colors and sizes
- Adds glamour to natural materials
- Securely set by hand
Care: Avoid contact with lotions, perfumes, and harsh chemicals. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth to maintain sparkle.
Resin
Resin allows us to create bold, colorful designs and encapsulate natural elements. We use high-quality resin in a variety of colors and finishes, from translucent to opaque, matte to glossy.
Characteristics:
- Vibrant, consistent colors
- Lightweight and comfortable
- Durable and water-resistant
- Allows for creative color combinations
- Can encapsulate flowers, leaves, or other natural elements
Care: Resin is relatively low-maintenance. Avoid prolonged sun exposure which can cause fading, and clean with a soft cloth.
Fabrics
We incorporate vibrant Ghanaian fabrics including traditional prints and contemporary textiles into select designs. These fabrics add color, pattern, and cultural storytelling to our jewelry.
Characteristics:
- Bold, colorful patterns
- Cultural significance and storytelling
- Soft, comfortable against skin
- Unique to each piece
Care: Fabric elements should be kept dry and away from moisture. Spot clean gently if needed and store flat to maintain shape.
Gold-Plated Brass
Our metal components are crafted from brass and finished with high-quality gold plating. This gives our pieces a luxurious, warm golden finish that complements our natural materials beautifully.
Characteristics:
- Warm, golden finish
- Durable base metal
- Hypoallergenic for most wearers
- Adds structure and elegance to designs
Care: Remove before bathing or swimming. Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, and harsh chemicals. Clean with a soft, dry cloth and store in a dry place to prevent tarnishing.
